TOPshots finalist

The striking photographic work of Beaconhills College student Maxie Gerodias has made it to TOPshots, an exhibition at the prestigious Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh).

Maxie’s photograph, titled ‘Unpredictability 2024’ was part of her ‘Spaces and Places’ photography series she completed in her VCE Media subject last year.

The photograph demonstrates her camera technique of capturing the contrasting visual effect of movement and stillness.

Maxie said the series was inspired by the emotions that come with the transition to adulthood, Year 12 and all the accompanying challenges of the year.

“I wanted the series to display how you are scared, and as you progress through you find yourself in a better position,” she said.

She also represented the evolving emotions through a progression of colour gradients on the works.

Her Media teacher, Deborah Spilsbury, said she was “over the moon” about Maxie’s achievement.

“Maxie has become both visually and technically skilled in photography,” she said. “To be exhibited in the emerging artists space at The Museum of Australian Photography is a huge achievement and testament to her passion, talent, and hard work in Media last year.”

After graduating from Beaconhills Berwick Campus in 2024, this year Maxie is studying a Bachelor of Science at Monash University and hopes to find a career in medical imaging and radiology.

TOPshots runs from 12 March to 5 May at MAPh in Wheelers Hill, home to the largest collection of Australian photography in the world.
