Students support pets of those in need

A College student initiative will help bring a little joy to the lives of the pets of those experiencing homelessness.

A group of Middle School students launched their Packs 4 Paws Appeal late last year at the Berwick Campus, raising enough money to create 48 gift packs of cat and dog food, collars and leads, brushes, pet treats and toys.

Students raised the money through a fundraising stall, selling chocolate, fresh watermelon, handmade key chains, bandanas and bookmarks, all which quickly sold out.

Year 7 student Rachel-Jayne said that seeing people sleeping rough in the city had inspired her to get involved in the appeal.

“I hope these packs will also help the people experiencing homelessness feel more hope and know that we care about them,” she said.

The College’s Head of Citizenship and Service, Sarah Dyce said, “The students really showed their ability to collaborate and work as team, which meant they were able to deliver a high level of support for the pets of those facing hardships.”

She said the packs will now be collected by Homeless Hounds Animal Rescue for distribution.

College therapy dog Smudgee, also threw his weight behind the appeal as the official Packs 4 Paws ambassador.
