Helicopter visit for Year 6

It’s not every day that a helicopter drops in to visit your school.

Year 6 students were thrilled with a visit from a Microflite helicopter as part of their learning about natural resources and bushfires.

The helicopter is one of seven aircraft used during fire seasons in Victoria and Tasmania. It has a military grade camera which uses colour and infrared filming and can pinpoint fire boundaries, hotspots and target areas under ember attack.

Pilot Neville Wright and Camera Systems Manager James Kagel were on board to chat to excited students and answer questions.

Teacher Judy Ward said it was a very relevant topic as many Beaconhills students had been directly or indirectly affected by fires in recent years, such as the 2019 Bunyip bushfires.
