We are saddened to hear of the passing of our Leaver House patron Rev. John Leaver, AO this morning. Rev. Leaver passed away peacefully after a short stay in hospital, surrounded by his family.

Rev. Leaver drew on his experiences of setting up a number of other Christian community colleges when he became involved in the College’s early planning meetings in 1980-81.

He was present at the opening of Beaconhills College in 1982, the fifth Christian community college to open in Victoria. He continued to be an active and keen supporter of the school and attended many official openings, church services and other events throughout the years.

In 1996, in conjunction with four foundation schools, he set out to form the Association of Ecumenical Schools of Victoria Inc, which later become the Victorian Ecumenical System of Schools Ltd (VESS). Rev. Leaver achieved an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) award for his service to education.

He is survived by his wife Wendy and children Jane and Susan. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family.

  • A Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate to the life of  Rev. John Leaver will be held in the Ansett Hall, Peninsula Grammar, 20 Wooralla Drive, Mt Eliza on Thursday 24 May at 11am. No flowers by request. Donations can be made to the Abacus Learning Centre or envelopes are available at the venue.
