Year 6 student Mitchell H earned the Cardinia Relay for Life ‘Spirit of Relay’ award on the weekend for his fundraising efforts.

Mitchell, whose dad has cancer, raised $3305 for cancer research through local sausage sizzles and donations from family and friends.

Proud mum Maree said as soon as Mitchell learned of his dad’s diagnosis, he was inspired to take action to help.

Year 10 student Robert E also had a fantastic fundraising effort, collecting $1675 in donations. Both students are in Millett House.

Of the 25 teams and hundreds of competitors in the February 27 all-night event, Beaconhills’ Pakenham Campus had three House teams – Millett, Creese and Rich.

Millett was the second-highest fundraiser, bringing in a total of $10,000 in donations, with Creese coming in at 7th with $3000. The College’s three teams raised a combined total of around $14,000.

Teacher Hayley Johnston-Coutts said it was a fantastic night and a great venue for the event, which was enjoyed by many students, staff and families.

“For our College, it is really about community service in action,” she said. “I think the students really enjoy being part of it, because rather than just handing over money, they get to do something proactive at the same time.”

Citizenship and service is one of the College’s six ‘Learning That Matters’ principles.

Mr Johnston-Coutts said next year’s event will be even bigger, with Tregoning House already signing up. The College’s Berwick Campus also fields a huge team for the 13-14 March Casey Relay for Life event at Berwick’s Akoonah Park.
