Our iPad Program

All students in Years 3 to 8 are required to have an iPad in class, while Years 9 to 12 students have options with BYOD.

 

It is preferable that students have an iPad capable of running the latest iOS (currently iPadOS13) because new apps and updates to existing apps will only be compatible with the latest version.

Students also need to make sure that, after all their apps are installed, they still have at least 3GB of free space to allow the iPad to remain updated and for school work.

As the year progresses the life in your battery may become a problem. Please ensure that the iPad is charged every night, it goes into Auto-Lock after few minutes of inactivity and the display is not set at its brightest.

Please note that some iPads and all iPad Mini models are no longer ideal because they will be exempt from the incompatible with NAPLAN testing from 2021.

The first thing you need to think about is the physical size of the iPad, a full size 9.7 inch or 10.5 inch.

Both will work well at Beaconhills College.

The larger 12.9 inch iPad Pro may be too big and cumbersome for school, especially for younger students.

The best advice is to go to the Apple Store and play with the iPads on show. See which one suits you. The colour is totally up to you.

Any size iPad will work at school, it depends how much storage you want for your own personal material. The minimum capacity is now 32GB which is adequate for school purposes.

At Beaconhills, we protect our students with stringent Internet content filtering and security. If you provide an iPad with cellular function, students can utilise the telephone network to bypass our security and can accidentally or deliberately access inappropriate sites. We recommend Wi-Fi only for all student iPads.

Each year the Apple Store at Fountain Gate hosts a Beaconhills Parent Night, exclusively for the Beaconhills community. On this night, Apple staff are on hand to show you the latest models of iPads and accessories and bags, as well as explain some of the features of the Pad. More information can be found here.

Beaconhills College is also a participating school of the Apple Family Funded Program that can provide:

  • in-store, telesales and a custom on-line store with special Beaconhills College pricing.
  • This covers special prices on iPads and MacBooks as well as AppleCare+ and accessories

There is also a stay-at-home option of ordering it from the online Apple Store. This is also at the recommended retail price, but you can get free engraving on the back of the iPad.

We have partnered with JB Education to provide Beaconhills families with easy access to great prices on a range of computer devices. This includes iPads, MacBooks and laptops by Microsoft and other suppliers as well a range of insurance options and various covers and bags.

There are a number of apps that are required by the College that students must have installed on their iPads. The specific apps depend largely on the year level of the student and lists can be found at the BeLearning Lounge under Apps, Books and other Resources.

Each icon is a link to the App Store and a simple tap will start the installation process. Parents should install all the apps before the start of the school year to ensure a smooth beginning.

The primary Learning Management System (LMS) is Showbie, a free app, for which students use the College provided email/Google account and password to access. Teachers use Showbie to provide electronic resources and interactive resources and students can use Showbie to electronically submit work. See here for more information.

A cover with soft edges that will take a bump and the accidental drop. There are cases available that are drop-proof and waterproof. They are not cheap, but still cheaper than replacing a smashed screen. This will be your best insurance policy.

A cover with a built-in stand is also worth considering.

You will probably need to budget in the range of $35-60 for a decent cover. The more expensive, do not always mean the more protective. You can pick up a good quality case without spending a fortune.

All Apple mobile devices come with a one year warranty covering any manufacturer problems and 90 days of phone support.

You can purchase an additional year of warranty, Apple Care+, and a full two years of device support for a cost. It also covers two accidental breakages, with an excess payment of $65.

If your iPad does stop working or has a fault then you should still bring it back to the Apple Store and see if they can help out. Apple fully recognises Australian Consumer Law and will give you the protection that comes with that law.

Neither Apple Care or Australian Consumer Law will protect you against a broken screen or physically damaged iPad. Many home insurance policies will cover against this type of accidental damage. Call your insurance policy before something happens and see what they offer. There are also many insurance companies that will cover your electronic equipment for loss or damage. Do a web-search for “iPad insurance” and you will find many on offer.

If the screen is cracked we strongly recommend getting it fixed.

The best place to get a screen repaired is at the Apple Store and it will retain your warranty. Unfortunately it will cost around $270. The alternative is to have it replaced by a third party. This will be much cheaper, but could void your warranty. The kiosks in the middle of most shopping centres do a good job of replacing the screen at around $100.
