National Champion: Bailley M
Year 5 Pakenham Campus student Bailley M has just become the best cross-country runner in Australia in his age group.
Bailley competed in the recent Australian All Schools Cross Country competition, collecting a gold medal in the 3000m individual race, as well as winning the team title and the 4 X 1500m relay. He ran the individual event in nine minutes and 59 seconds.
To reach the Nationals, Bailley had progressed through District, Divisional, Regional and State cross-country competitions. He qualified for the national event despite falling over in the State race, but still managing to run from last to fifth place – enough to qualify.
He said he was very happy to win the individual event, mainly because he likes his medal.
What’s his winning race strategy? “I just stick behind the first place (runner) then overtake on the last 100m.” Easy!
An all-round sports lover (he also enjoys football, basketball and athletics), Bailley said he would like to compete in the Olympics one day.
