Performing Arts

Age Appropriate Learning

Beaconhills views involvement in the Performing Arts as an integral part of a student’s life and development at College. From Preparatory to Year 12, each student has the opportunity to experience Music, Drama and Dance, through the curriculum, co-curricular and House systems.

Performance instils confidence, discipline, courage and pride. The Performing Arts Department is highly respected, and consistently achieves excellent outcomes.

Involvement in both the Southern Independent Schools (SIS) and Gippsland Independent Schools (GIS) Performing Arts events has underscored the deserved reputation that Beaconhills is a leader in the area of performance arts, whilst maintaining strong relationships with Independent Schools in the region.

Music

Through methods such as Kodaly and Orff/Schulwerk, and in conjunction with other creative pedagogies, the Beaconhills music programme develops skills in listening, composing and performing in Junior, Middle and Senior students.

Beaconhills students are encouraged to realise personal creativity through innovative, challenging and inspiring programmes. Students have the opportunity to perform as a class group in annual concerts, specialist string and band concerts (Years 2, 5 and 7) and assembly performances. Year 8 classes participate in a ‘Soundhouse’ experience, which focuses on composition and technology at the Soundhouse in Melbourne. VCE in Music (Group and Solo Performance) allows students with greater solo experience to use their talents and skills as part of their senior studies.

Drama

In Junior School, drama plays an integral part in many subject areas beyond the Performing Arts, such as English, Humanities and LOTE. All students in Years 7 and 8 undertake Drama as a performance subject and have the opportunity to prepare and present performances to their parents and peers. Students are exposed to a variety of genres from Shakespeare to comedy. VCE Drama and Theatre Studies are available for students wishing to pursue dramatic interests.

Dance

The discipline of Dance continues to be popular at Beaconhills. The Dance Programme has developed over the past 5 years and is one of the most successful and vibrant programmes of its kind. Involvement in Dance allows students to express themselves through movement and gain an awareness of space, body and self. Like all Performing Arts subjects, it is an excellent discipline for group dynamics and cross year level activity. VCE Dance is offered to students in Years 10 to 12.

Personal Best

Special connections exist between Music, Drama and Dance at Beaconhills. Highly committed staff provide quality classroom education and promote personal best for our students.

The Co-curricular Programme at Beaconhills aims to instil a love and understanding of the disciplines of Music, Drama and Dance – in students from Preparatory to Year 12. The full time and sessional staff excel at providing unique opportunities for students to be involved in ensembles, troupes and extra tuition.

The Department programme provides professional opportunities for students through visiting artists such as Arts2go, OzOpera, VicArts, and other professional groups. Teachers are committed to encouraging students to broaden their cultural knowledge and experiences. Senior students regularly attend professional performances in Melbourne as part of VCE Curriculum Studies.

Performance facilities include teaching studios, a recording studio, well equipped performance venues, and access to Performing Arts technology.

Community

Students have the opportunity to undertake tours both interstate and to local schools as well as supporting the local community by providing performance groups for events.

Many Beaconhills students who study Music, Drama or Dance at VCE level, undertake university courses at tertiary level and have been represented at the VCE Top Class concerts on numerous occasions.

The success of the programme is highlighted by the number of past collegians who have experienced professional success in this field and who continue to be involved in the Performing Arts Department, either tutoring or performing.
