Learning at Beaconhills

Co-curricular

At Beaconhills an extensive, quality co-curricular programme is offered providing a real diversity of opportunities for students to extend their horizons and develop the whole person. Students can pursue their particular talents, interests and skills as well as explore new options. Each student attending the College is expected to become involved in at least one activity. Rehearsals / practices may be held before school, lunchtime or after school. Although Beaconhills does not have compulsory Saturday morning sport, some clubs do compete or perform during the weekend or holidays.

Sporting involvement is a main part of the co-curricular programme and is closely linked with the Physical Education and Health Studies areas. Sporting activities include sailing, basketball, snow skiing, kayaking and equestrian to name a few. We understand, however, that not all students have equal aptitudes or interests in sport and so we offer activities outside this realm.

Beaconhills is well known for its Performing Arts. Every second year each Campus enters Rock Eisteddfod and Wakakirri competitions. In the alternate year students are able to participate in a major theatrical production.

Many of the College’s co-curricular programmes are associated with improving learning strategies such as debating, public speaking, chess and computer club.

Student exchanges to other countries are open to all senior secondary students. Senior students are invited to participate in language exchanges to our sister schools in France and Japan. In 2004 Beaconhills continued the working relationship with Bhadaure School in Nepal through trekking, cultural exchange and community service. In 2006, a Peru trek and Thailand tour took place and in 2007 students participated in a London/Spain Art tour.

Beaconhills Australian Army Cadet Unit is highly respected in the region. The unit is an integral part of the Values Education Programme of the College. It offers opportunities for all members to develop leadership, teamwork, organisational skills and self-discipline. The Cadet Unit has a strong community focus forming the Honour Guard at the Dawn Service and leading the College commemorative services.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award combines skill development, expeditions and community service activities and is available throughout the Middle and Senior years. This programme develops self-reliance, perseverance and responsibility.

The Beaconhills Kayak Team, currently the State Champions, compete in various marathon and sprint regattas throughout the year. Students have the opportunity to participate in kayak racing at various competitive levels; from novice to potential Australian representation at world titles.

Each student is encouraged to become involved and experience a breadth of opportunities in which to achieve their personal best. Beaconhills has a proud record of achievement and involvement in all its co-curricular offerings.
