Big Day Out at the MCG!
June, 2009
A group of Year 5/6 girls at Beaconhills had the unusual and exciting opportunity at the Queen’s Birthday Melbourne vs. Collingwood clash to play on the MCG in the half-time game as part of the ‘women’s round’. Representing Melbourne Football Club, the girls played a team from Cowes Primary School representing Collingwood.
After initial trials at school to select the team and numerous training sessions, the girls were delighted when two Melbourne Football Club players joined them prior to the big game to help them hone their skills. Beaconhills is now a ‘Demons Friendly School’ which involves the Melbourne Football Club in regular visits to the College.
Colin Silvia and Jamie Bunnell helped Beaconhills P.E. teacher Paul Groves run the training drills on the school oval in readiness for their special MCG appearance.
On the big day at ‘The G’, the Beaconhills team gathered in the change rooms to receive their official Melbourne Football Club uniform, posed for the team photo and went onto the ‘hallowed turf’ to display their skills. After the game, they went on a lap of honour around the ground.
