Settling in
A safe and friendly environment awaits your child
Airport pick-up
We can arrange for your child to be met at the airport on arrival
in Melbourne and taken to the Homestay to settle in and meet the
new ‘family’.
Homestay - Home away from home
Homestay is our accommodation option for international students
who come to study, unaccompanied by a parent. Homestay families
are carefully selected and approved by the International Students
Coordinator. All of the Homestay families selected are located within
a close distance to Beaconhills College or with access to convenient
transport.
All Homestays provide a single, fully furnished room, three meals a
day and laundry facilities
Students have the opportunity to learn about Australia’s culture by
participating in Homestay. It provides both the international student
and the host family with a valuable and rewarding experience,
with many students staying in contact with host families long
after their stay.
All Homestay hosts are Australian citizens, hold a current Police
Check Certificate and a ‘Working with Children’ card.
Guardians - With your child's very best interest at heart
All international students living in Australia, independent of their
parents, are required to have a legal guardian. The school can arrange
guardianship.
Guardians have a vital role in ensuring the care and wellbeing of the student while they are away from the school. In essence, they assume the role of parent and provide the following support to the student:
- Regular weekly contact with the student
- 24 hour emergency contact
- Representation on behalf of the parents and the student in all matters relating to academic study including parent/ teacher/ student conferences
- Assistance in moving to the Homestay accommodation (if guardian is not Homestay)
- Transportation to and from the airport
- Assistance with living away from home – setting up bank accounts
- Health and medical guidance and transport to medical practitioners at times of illness
- Counseling services (in first language where necessary)
- Assistance to parents in the interpretation of school reports, fees payments and school procedures
Orientation
On arrival at the school, all international students
will be met by Beaconhills staff who can assist with
any queries.
In addition, all students attend an interview with the
Head of Senior School and the Careers Counsellor
to discuss their interests and needs. Their course of
study is confirmed at this stage and books and material
requirements are advised. A special orientation
program is arranged by the International students
Coordinator to ensure the students feel confident in
their new Australian school.
After settling, the Homestay caregiver will
help your child establish a bank account and show them the
local facilities. Your child will also need to purchase text
books and a school uniform from our uniform shop
located at the school.
