Matthew Buntine heads to Greater Western Sydney
Pakenham Campus VCE student Matthew Buntine’s feet haven’t quite hit the ground yet after being picked in last night’s AFL National Draft.
The young defender was amongst the top five players picked for the new Greater Western Sydney team and has already been earmarked as future captain.
Matthew, who finished his VCE exams on Monday, has been catapulted into the life of a superstar but he couldn’t be happier, although he is still adjusting to the media attention.
“Draft night was pretty hectic. Getting up on the stage and meeting (Kevin) Sheedy for the first time, then all the media photos and functions to attend…it was pretty exciting,” he said.
“But it’s a bit of a strange feeling – getting all the attention from the media and people not normally interested in you!”
He admitted that life would “change pretty dramatically”. The club wastes no time – he is moving to Sydney on Sunday morning and then straight into full-time training: “It will be pretty much living and breathing football.”
However, he is still eagerly awaiting the outcome of his VCE exams and may eventually consider a career in sports management.
Matthew played AFL for Vic Country and the Dandenong Stingrays and has been a member of the AIS-AFL scholarship program for a year.
