Gift of the gab
Our Senior School Debating team has won the Southern Independent Schools (SIS) Debating Championships, defeating long-time rival, Woodleigh College, at the grand final on Wednesday, 12 October.
Debaters Kathryn M, Stephanie T and Paulo T worked hard to develop a strategy for their grand final showdown, where each speaker spoke for five to seven minutes – in the affirmative – on the topic of ‘The right to vote should be conditional on passing a civics test.’
“The team was required to develop a model ‘civics test’ to support our case,” said Belinda Meade, Debating coach and English teacher at the Berwick Campus. “It included mock questions and recommendations on the pass rate.”
To make it to the grand final, the Beaconhills team placed second ahead of 13 competitors, arguing convincingly that ‘Antarctica should be protected from all development.’
