A coming of age

The Seskis family

The recent Valedictory Dinners to formally farewell our Year 12 students celebrated a coming of age in more ways than one.

Not only did these events honour the wonderful achievements of our students, but also signified a new era of maturity for Beaconhills College, as we begin to see the first batch of second generation students completing their journey with the school.

This was the graduation year for Helen and Brendan Seskis’ daughter Rachael, who was our first second generation student to be enrolled at the school. Rachael began Prep in 1999.

Her mother Helen Seskis, formerly Helen Pearson, was one of the small group of eight Year 8 and 26 Year 7 students who made up our student body when the College opened in 1982. In 1986, Helen was part of our first HSC class of just nine students to graduate. Helen’s husband Brendan has been a member of our College Board since 2005.

Seeing the development of these cross-generational links is both rewarding for our entire College community and inspiring for our students. It creates continuity and of a sense of history and, most importantly, helps foster connectedness throughout the school.

With about 75 second generation students enrolled across the College campuses, I expect to see many more second – and eventually third – generation students graduating as the school continues to grow and mature.
