Language for Life
The benefits of Beaconhills College’s sister school relationships extend well beyond Year 12, as former student Johnathan Carter discovered this year.
Johnathan spent seven months working this year as an English Language Assistant at the College’s sister school Immaculée Conception in Laval, France.
Johnathan, who completed Year 12 at the Berwick Campus last year, boarded at the Laval school during his exchange. He worked with Senior School students, helping them with English conversation and pronunciation.
He described working in Laval as a fantastic experience: “the achievement I am most proud of was being able to learn to speak the language fluently”. He said his only regret was he didn’t stay longer.
Head of French at Berwick Campus, Eva Lorenc, said Johnathan was an excellent ambassador for the College during his stay at Laval.
“The teachers and staff were so impressed with Johnathan’s conscientiousness and professionalism,” she said.
Johnathan now has his sights set on a double degree in Arts and Commerce at Deakin University with a view to spending one of his study years in Nantes, France.
Berwick Campus is now hosting French Language Assistant, Thomas Candon, who arrived during the September study break and will stay for nine months.
Thomas will help the College’s Middle and Senior School students with their French conversation practice and the VCE students prepare for their oral exams.
Thomas also finished Year 12 last year and hopes the exchange program will help him improve his English as well as give him the chance to experience Australia.
Beaconhills College has established links with sister schools in Japan and France, which gives Berwick and Pakenham Campus students the chance to participate in study tours and individual student exchanges.
