Beaconhills was saddened to hear of the devastation caused by the events that shook Japan in March 2011.  Among those affected by the earthquake, tsunami and ongoing nuclear fallout were the members of Beaconhills Sister School Ibaraki Christian Education Community.

Ibaraki is located directly south of the Fukushima Prefecture which hosts the nuclear power plant which suffered major damage from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami leading to nuclear radiation leaks.

Although the school buildings and facilities received relatively minor damage as a result of the natural disaster, there were a number of students whose family homes were destroyed in the earthquake, washed away by the tsunami or have been displaced because of the nuclear accident and cannot return home.

In support of our sister school, the College held ‘Japan Week’ and ran an assembly program to raise awareness of the situation.  A free dress day was scheduled and students were encouraged to make $5 and $10 donations to go towards relief fundraising.  As a gesture of compassion, students from Years 5-12 participated in the folding of 1000 paper cranes to be sent as a gift to the community of Ibaraki.

Our gift of 1,131,324 Yen (AU$13,757) and the 1000 cranes was received by our friends in mid June 2011.  We have been advised that the money raised by Beaconhills families has done so much to assist families whose homes were destroyed.  The money has helped students stay at school and continue their education while their families rebuild their lives.

On behalf of  Mr Tatsuo Suzuki, Principal and Mr Jim Batten, Chancellor of the Ibaraki Christian Education Community, thank you to all the families who donated money and to all students and staff who took time out of their day to fold a crane in the spirit of peace and hope.
