Families support iPad roll-out

Headmaster's Blog Comments Off

iPADI was pleased to see over 500 Beaconhills families at the Parent Information Evenings held at our Berwick and Pakenham campuses this week.

Feedback received from families has been very positive and parents showed support for the benefits in functionality and potential savings in textbook costs that iPad technology will offer.

Not only will the roll-out provide Internet access for all students, they will have access to an endless bounty of ‘rich’ educational resources.  iPads will enable teachers to implement a strong program of differentiated learning, whereby students will have multiple ways to acquire content and to process, construct and make sense of ideas. Regardless of differences in ability, all students within a classroom can learn effectively using touch screen technology, which for many students is already embraced and integrated into their lives.

The iPad has been chosen as it is lightweight, highly portable, is tailored to display eBooks, has excellent battery life and is leading its class for internet access and research capability.

The program will see all students from Years 5-11 participate in this compulsory program. For students in Years 9-11, the program will be funded by the Federal Government subsidy, with families required to purchase an iPad for students in Years 5-8. The Junior School will be provided with some iPads as will all teaching staff.  Students entering Year 12 in 2012 will have the option to participate at their own cost.

The College is still to finalise a number of details relating to the iPad roll-out, including final costing and payment options for families.  This information will be available early in Term 4, in the meantime a list of questions and answers is available in the BeaconNet Parent Centre.  I am confident that the decision to introduce this technology at Beaconhills will enrich our learning environment and your child’s education.
