Times aren’t so tough, students discover
Gemma W gets into the Medieval spirit
A fascinating glimpse into medieval times last week was enough to make Year 8 Berwick Campus students very grateful to be living in the modern age.
Students enjoyed a visit from the Medieval Education and Entertainment performers, the culmination of a Semester 1 unit on Medieval history.
The performers talked about punishments for crimes in Medieval times, the weapons used by everyone from peasants to knights, the types of dances that were popular and an overview of the class system of the era.
They also gave explanations of how Medieval tournaments worked, the training regime knights would undergo to prepare for tournaments and the celebrity nature of those events.
Head of Middle School Learning, Stephen McGinley, said students learned many interesting facts, for example, how a simple lack of communication led many to believe that people in India had ears the size of elephants.
“This was a valuable insight into what the times were like for people living during the Medieval period,” Mr McGinley said. “It was a chance for our students to experience a more ‘hands-on’ approach to the topics covered in the unit.”
