Students perform at the Eisteddfod

May is traditionally a busy month for Performing Arts in the College and this year is no exception. We have had some outstanding student performances across a variety of productions, with more exciting events on the way.

At the official opening of our magnificent Performing Arts Auditorium at the Pakenham Campus, our students did a wonderful job with their music, drama and dance routines which really showed our visitors – including the Anglican Archbishop Dr Philip Freier – the high calibre of our Performing Arts programs.

Berwick Campus students have returned from the South East Eisteddfod with some great results, including second place for a polished performance by our Senior Concert Band, third place for our 80 piece Combined Junior School Choir (one point behind Hillcrest and six points behind St Margaret’s) and an Honourable Mention for the Bel Canto choir.

There were also some good individual results with Kirsty S (Year 12) placing third in the Open Piano Solo section and Sonyta T (Year 11) and Kirsty placing second in the Accompaniment section.

At the recent GIS Cultural Festival, Pakenham Campus students were among students from eight schools competing in music, drama, theatre sports, debating, public speaking and chess. Beaconhills came third overall with wins in drama and theatre sports. We also had some solid student solo results, including a win for Josh I on bass guitar and Avalon A for public speaking.

VCE drama students have worked hard to prepare their Drama Ensembles at both campuses, with some interesting themes such as crime, fairy tales and social networking being explored.

This week has also seen the staging of COSI at Pakenham Campus, our first major production in our revamped Performing Arts Auditorium. I attended COSI on Thursday night and was so impressed with the show – congratulations to students and staff for a memorable night.

Next week will also see Berwick Campus stage its Winter Concert, which will be an event well worth attending, with 250 students from all year levels performing dance, drama and music items.

And stay tuned for ‘Guys and Dolls’ at Pakenham Campus in late July. We had a sneak preview at the Performing Arts Auditorium opening and it certainly promises to be a top class production.
