Performing Arts Auditorium Opened
The Archbishop
Beaconhills College this week celebrated the official opening of the Performing Arts Auditorium and new Administration Centre.
The Archibishop of Melbourne, The Most Reverend Dr Philip Freier, was at the event to open and dedicate the Centre, along with the Moderator of the Uniting Church, Ms Isabel Thomas Dobson.
In his speech, the Archbishop spoke of the importance of a Christian-based education that “educates the whole person” and praised Beaconhills College for its aim of spiritually nurturing every student.
“I hope this will be a place of harmony, peace and goodwill,” he said in his dedication.
The ceremony showcased student performances in drama, music and dance including a rendition of ‘The Muppet Show Theme’ and a Senior Choir performance of ‘I am Australian’, a preview of the Senior School’s ‘Guys and Dolls’ production and a Finale of ‘Beethoven’s Fifth Mash Up Medley’.
But the show-stopper was staff member Austin Moore’s extraordinary rendition of ‘Nessun Dorma’.
The revamped Performing Arts Auditorium will be one of the largest venues of its type in the region, offering a combination of tiered and floor-level seating for more than 900 people.
The auditorium, which will be available for community use, also boasts a ‘shark-tooth’ design ceiling for excellent sound quality and new audio-visual systems, such as drop-down screens which allow better viewing for people seated in the back rows.
The development comprises a new entrance foyer, extra music rooms, a ‘Black Box’ theatre, environmental initiatives such as water harvesting systems and evaporative cooling. A new College Administration Centre has been developed adjoining the Performing Arts Centre.
The cast from Guys and Dolls performs.
Beaconhills College Headmaster, Mr Tony Sheumack, says the College combined its own funds with the Federal Government’s BER (Building Education Revolution) $3 million grant to upgrade an old basketball stadium and build a badly-needed new Administration Centre.
“We have turned what was a half-court basketball stadium into a high quality, major multi-function venue for Performing Arts and a range of other events or functions,” Mr Sheumack said.
Members of local and state government, church groups, schools, businesses, community groups, Board Members, staff and students attended the ceremony.
