New York, New York: students explore the Big Apple.

Nineteen Year 11 and 12 students from the Pakenham Campus have returned from the trip of a lifetime to New York and Canada, gaining some invaluable experiences and friendships along the way.

Visual Arts teacher Fiona Tomsic and Physical Education teacher Gareth Briglia travelled with the students, enjoying the sights and sounds of New York for five days before heading to Winnipeg, Canada where they stayed with families from the Dakota Collegiate.

In New York, students visited Central Park, watched the New York Yankees play at Madison Square Gardens and enjoyed the city’s famous art and a Broadway musical.

In Winnipeg, as ‘honorary Dakota students’, they visited the Titanic exhibition, watched an ice hockey game, attempted curling and learned about Canadian indigenous customs and beliefs.

Ms Tomsic says the trip grew from her own exchange visit as a teacher to Winnipeg in 2009.

“Having the link with the Canadian school meant that we could offer more than just a tourist look at the Northern Hemisphere – we could give our students a chance to feel a part of a community and family,” she says.

“Our students were excellent ambassadors for our College and came away with lifelong friendships with their new-found Canadian families.”

It is hoped that a group of Dakota students and staff will visit Beaconhills in the future.
