The Drum Theatre, Dandenong, was packed to the rafters this week as nine schools gathered together for a spectacular showcase of music, song and dance.

Performing Arts students from the Berwick Campus were among the performers at ‘The Big Night Concert’, an annual event run by Southern Independent Schools (SIS).

The event requires students from each school to work collaboratively to produce a performance, with the line-up including a concert band, a guitar, percussion and choir ensemble and three dances including hip hop, contemporary and showdance.

The students had just two daytime rehearsals at St John’s College in Dandenong and one pre-performance rehearsal to pull together the show, but SIS executive secretary Sharon Lowe says the night was a huge success.

She says the night not only gives all students the chance to perform in front of their school and families, but to learn teamwork and new skills.

“They are getting new teachers they are not used to working with and (in the case of dance) learning different types of choreography,” she says.
