Human spirit will rise above disaster
A prayer for the earthquake victims
It seems unbelievable that we are yet again watching another human disaster unfold in Christchurch, New Zealand after Tuesday’s terrible earthquake.
Australians have grappled with devastating bushfires in recent years and this year torrential rain and flooding in our eastern states.
We felt New Zealand’s pain following the terrible Pike River Coal mine disaster and now this most recent destructive event in Christchurch.
Amidst the chaos of loss of precious lives and property, which Australians are all too familiar with, there is one common thread, described by the Dean of Christchurch Cathedral, the Very Reverend Peter Beck as “the Canterbury spirit”.
He explains this as a “reaching out” amongst his people in this time of crisis to help each other. It is essentially the human spirit at its best. We witnessed this willingness to pull together as a community during our local disasters – a genuine desire to help each other carry on, heal and rebuild.
Our prayers are with those affected by the New Zealand earthquake and I hope members of our Beaconhills community, like other Australians, think about how they can help – even in a small way – those suffering loss in Christchurch.
