A new Studio Arts competition at Pakenham Campus where Year 11 students had to create portraits of staff members has proven a big hit.

The inaugural Beaconhills ‘Archibald’ Portrait competition included 19 portraits in a variety of mediums and styles, reflecting the broad range of personalities of both staff subjects and the student artists.

Teacher of Visual Arts Fiona Tomsic said students loved the freedom to create their individual portraits.

“The level of commitment and enthusiasm every studio art student worked with throughout this project was sensational. This was such a success,” Ms Tomsic said.

All staff voted for winners in two categories; ‘most popular’ and ‘most creative’.

Jane C’s portrait of PE teacher Peter Kelly, in bold black and white against the blue of the Australian sky, won the ‘most popular’ category.

And in the creative category, Tahlia V was the clear winner with her portrait of Head of Clark House – Senior School, Laurie Cilia.

Tahlia painted the work using various strengths of coffee to capture the subject’s love of coffee and his jacket was hessian to resemble his unique fashion style.

Ms Tomsic said she hoped to make the Beaconhills’ ‘Archibalds’ an annual event.
