Rising to the Hillary Challenge
Our Hillary Challenge team
A Berwick Campus Year 10 team earned a reputable third place in the inaugural Hillary Challenge held from October 1-3 at Lake Eildon.
The ‘Amazing Race’-style event was held in Australia for the first time to decide which team would compete in New Zealand next year, in what is that country’s most prestigious student adventure race.
Our eight students put in an outstanding effort against seven other teams, given they were the youngest group competing, said Berwick Campus Head of Outdoor Education, Sam Maddock.
“The students absolutely loved it and our third placing means we will automatically qualify to compete in next year’s final,” Mr Maddock said.
He said next year’s event will attract teams from around Australia – not just Victoria – and will be “bigger than Ben Hur”.
The event sets students a series of mystery challenges to complete within a timeframe, such as building a raft to navigate around an island, rogaining and mountain-biking.
The team was: Brad S, Emily C, David G, Ashlea S, Kathryn M, Tayla Y, Jake R and Jarryd G.
