Sixty families in flood-ravaged Pakistan have benefited from vital food supplies thanks to the fundraising efforts of Beaconhills College staff and students.

Staff at the Pakenham and Berwick Campuses held ‘Pancakes for Pakistan’ events which, combined with private donations, raised $2665.

The money has already been used to buy food for families in the Afghanistan refugee camp of Babogan, Pakistan, which is flooded and houses 3000 women and children in tents.

Leading Australian humanitarian Dr Nouria Salehi has arranged the distribution of food through her charity group, the Australian Afghanistan Development Organisation (AADO).

A successful senior research biophysicist and restauranteur, Dr Salehi – an Order of Australia recipient – is best known for her remarkable humanitarian efforts and is a leading advocate for refugees.

Dr Salehi ensured the College funds safely reached those in need, distributing bags containing 7kg of rice, 4kg of sugar, 1kg of solid oil and 1kg of tea to more than 60 families.

Teachers Anne Bellavance (Pakenham Campus) and John Bellavance (Berwick Campus), who initiated the fundraiser, said the generosity of staff and students was fantastic.

Mr Bellavance said he was touched when Senior School students from the Berwick Campus initiated a further fundraising effort for the flood refugees by suggesting a free dress day.

“It was their idea – they wanted to do something more to help,” Mr Bellavance said.

Thanks go to Middle School McConchie House, Pakenham Campus, the Berwick Campus’ Staff Prayer and Fellowship Group, the French departments at both campuses, staff and students for a commendable effort to help those in need.
