Flags Foster Understanding

flagrais260810Children at Pakenham’s Little Beacons Learning Centre were excited to participate in their first official flag-raising ceremony this week.

The Centre has introduced pint-sized flags and flagpoles to help expand the children’s understanding of a global perspective and to encourage families to embrace cultural diversity.

The children will have five flags to care for; the Australian flag, the Indigenous flag, the Beaconhills College flag, a peace flag and a New Zealand flag to use when teacher tour groups from that country visit each term.

The pre-schoolers have also learned to sing the National Anthem.

In her prayer at the ceremony, Pakenham Campus Chaplain Rev. Peggy Kruse said the flags were a reminder that we lived in a free country where we could vote and enjoy the opportunities people in other countries did not have.

Little Beacons Team Leader Donna Eyles said the flags had inspired many questions from the children.

“The flags help to establish a sense of community and create an awareness of the global nature of our community,” she said.

Junior School students Richard D (Year 4) and Stephanie B (Year 4) each gave a speech and Little Beacons students passed out little commemorative flags to guests.
