Thai Artist Fires Imaginations
Berwick Campus students were treated to the talents of famous Thai-born ceramicist Vipoo Srivilasa when he visited the College last week.
Mr Srivilasa ran a series of workshops with groups of Year 8 and Year 11 students, demonstrating his techniques in creating his highly imaginative sculptures.
Now based in Melbourne, the award-winning artist has works exhibited in many galleries both here and overseas. His art reflects a fusion of Thai and Australian culture.
Berwick Campus’ Head of Visual Arts Lesley Light says all Mr Srivilasa’s works incorporate his ‘signature’ of a mermaid, a concept he developed from a story his grandmother told him.
“The works are just astonishing in their detail,” she says. “He is very interested in saving the environment and this is reflected in his work.”
A committed environmentalist, Mr Srivilasa’s concern about the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef is reflected in his latest series of works ‘Helping Hands’, fostering the idea that ‘every hand can make a difference’.
Other works make use of recycled materials, such as buttons, to add decorative interest to the pieces.
During the workshops, Year 11 students created three-dimensional monsters, while Year 8s concentrated on two-dimensional works. The works will now be dried, glazed and then fired.
The students were delighted with the workshops and loved Mr Srivilasa’s sense of humour and his energy and enthusiasm.
