Students and Salvos team up to Support Underprivileged

Latest News Comments Off

RedShieldAppealThe week beginning 31st May saw Year 9 students expand their view of the world. More specifically, the troubled and broken world of the homeless and needy who live in Melbourne’s CBD. Students were involved in two presentations given by two similar organisations, Urban Seed and the Salvation Army. Both organisations work very closely with the homeless and supported them by supplying safe places to be. blankets, food, friendship, support and, most importantly, hope.

Following the presentation by the Salvation Army, students contributed their services to the Red Shield Appeal by collecting money on three intersections in the CBD, over $4300 was collected!

The first Red Shield Appeal was held in 1965 to meet the demand on Salvation Army services. While the appeal has been expanded since that time, demand upon Salvation Army services continues to increase. Funds raised through the Red Shield Appeal each year are needed more than ever if the Salvos are to maintain their services to the local community. Beaconhills is the first school to help the Salvation Army with this appeal mid-week. Students gained much from this eye-opening experience and were assisted in developing a greater social conscience.
