Sam Watson spends time with local children

I was fortunate to accompany Archbishop Philip Freier and Sam Watson (Head of Rich, Senior School and Teacher of Sport Valley) on a two day tour of Kowanyama, Queensland.

Kowanyama is a small village on the western side of Cape York, it has a population of just over 1,000 people, of which 90% are indigenous Australians.

Our small travelling cohort was welcomed into the community with open arms, the children so eager to spend time with our group and engage with us on many levels.  It is humbling to experience a culture so different to ours, where the locals have so little of the things we consider important and yet are so full of enthusiasm and optimism.

The purpose of the trip was to spend time visiting the local school with the purpose of creating links for future student exchanges.  I enjoyed my time in northern Queensland and look forward to sending Beaconhills students there to experience life in an indigenous community in the near future.
