Lux Luceat dinner
Each term at Beaconhills College, selected senior students are invited at each campus to attend a formal dinner, catered by Food Technology students, and to hear a guest speaker talk about a variety of careers. Recently, the Term 1 dinners were held at the Valley and Village Campuses and, in both cases, College alumni attended the dinners as the guest speakers.
At the Pakenham Campus, the students were addressed by the 1993 College Dux, Mr Grant Kassell. Since he completed his tertiary science studies, Grant has been working with an engineering company that specializes in designing and manufacturing environmental monitoring equipment. He is now the Manager of the firm’s Research and Development section, where he heads up a team of ten engineers. The company has rapidly expanded its operations during Grant’s 13 years with them and he has to travel overseas frequently as a result. Grant was a most impressive and inspiring speaker and gave the students a great deal of encouragement to pursue a science-related career.
At the Berwick Campus, the students were also addressed by an engineer, in this case a Class of 1996 alumni, Ms Jacqui Heydon, who is a Design Engineer with VicRoads, one of very few female engineers in this area of work area. Her account of the various problems faced by VicRoads in the construction of the Pakenham by-pass was of particular interest. The female students were undoubtedly challenged and encouraged by her achievements.
As more and more alumni return to the College each year to address the current students, it is clear that those students who were heavily involved in a wide variety of College activities and developed the skills of communication, leadership, commitment and perseverance have almost invariably gone on to have very successful, fulfilling and productive careers.
